FDA Approves Zelboraf to Treat Advanced Melanoma
The FDA approved Zelboraf on August 17, 2012 for metastatic and unresectable Stage III melanoma.
This was very quick approval, and came months before the deadline. A few points to note:
--median time on the drug is 6 months
--cost will be $9400/month
--One trial found 84 percent of the advanced melanoma patients taking Zelboraf survived for at least six months, compared to 64 percent of the patients taking a traditional chemotherapy drug called dacarbazine. Zelboraf reduced the risk of death by 63 percent.
